Surname Saturday: Cruisin' Down the mtDNA Highway

Lately I've been thinking about mitochondrial DNA quite a lot , and thus have decided to explore each woman's story in my direct maternal line.   Some I have been able to find out a lot about, others still remain a  mystery.  This is going to be an ongoing project!

Starting with my maternal grandmother, here is my direct maternal lineage (maternal haplogroup H1a1):

|
AMY (or ELIZABETH?) maiden name unknown, born about 1622 MA, died Feb 20, 1665 Andover, Essex Co MA. Wife of MARK GRAVES of Lynn Essex Co MA. Surname Saturday: My Cornwall Connection

It's been a busy week for genealogy research!   I acquired several different "DNA cousins" through 23andMe, which prompted a flurry of research activity.  One of them lives in Cornwall, England, and his family has lived there for generations.  I was very, very excited to meet him!

My maternal great great grandmother CORDELIA RICKARD was born 1829 in Kenwyn parish, Cornwall, England. I have written about her a couple of times, as she is the "Woman in the Photograph" that I use as my i.d. photo for this blog.

Finding an actual DNA link to Cornwall inspired me to attempt to find out more about my RICKARD ancestors and their relations. So I spent a good part of the week perusing the Cornwall Online Parish Clerk website.  This is a wonderful resource for anyone researching in Cornwall.  Without it, I would have never been able to find out about my family history there.

This week I finally found my gg grandmother CORDELIA's baptism record (surname misspelled), and although she was likely born in Kenwyn, she was baptised in Chacewater Parish, Sept 6, 1829, along with her siblings SAMUEL RICKARD (died young 1841), and HENRY RICKARD (died childhood). Another younger sibling HENRY VARLEY RICKARD was baptised in Chacewater in 1832. The rest of the older siblings-- WILLIAM RICKARD, MARY RICKARD (m JOHN BUNT),  RICHARD HICKS RICKARD (died young), EMMA RICKARD,  RICHARD RICKARD Jr,  JOSEPH RICKARD, and MARK RICKARD-- were baptised in Kenwyn Parish.

I also discovered that my gg grandmother was descended from a long line of CORDELIAs.  And that her full name was CORDELIA HICKS RICKARD (after her mother CORDELIA HICKS who married RICHARD RICKARD).

My ggg grandfather RICHARD RICKARD b abt 1783 was an Innkeeper and "victualler" in Chacewater and Blackwater.  He died Jan 28, 1835 in Blackwater, Chacewater Parish, Cornwall.  His widowed wife & several of his children (including my gg grandmother) emigrated to the United States in 1845 on the ship "Henry Clay".

Here is the list of surnames from Cornwall that I added to my family tree this week: RICKARD, HICKS, GILL, VARLEY, GILBERT, JENNINGS, WEARNE or WARNE,  EVA,  MURLEY,  BRAY or BRAYE, DANIELL or DANIEL.

For more information, see my Rootsweb online family tree "New England Ancestors of Ruby Bolton Brown."

Have a great day!

Amanuensis Monday: Transcribed Obituary of ELIZABETH T MILLER Chillicothe, Livingston Co MO

Here is the obituary of my great great grandmother, ELIZABETH T MILLER nee MOSELEY, born about 1819 in Buckingham Co VA, daughter of WILLIAM FRANCIS MOSELEY and MARY "POLLY' SAUNDERS. I transcribed the obituary from the Chillicothe MO Constitution newspaper, dated Jan 29, 1900

A PIONEER RESIDENT AND MUCH BELOVED CHRISTIAN WOMAN
Elizabeth T. Miller, relict of the late William F. Miller, and one of the pioneer residents of Chillicothe died at the home of her son, Henry, on S. Washington St Saturday morning at 5:10 o'clock, of old age and general debility.

Mrs. Miller was 81 years old and came with her husband and family to this city in 1874. Her life has been a busy useful one and devoted to alleviating the suffering of those less fortunate than herself. She was a kind, noble, Christian woman and before old age and ill health confined her to her home she was an active charity worker and many people in Chillicothe hold her in loving remembrance for a helping hand that was extended in time of need.

Mrs. Miller had been in failing health for some time and two months ago was taken to her bed. After lingering a few short weeks she was called to that reward awaiting her in heaven.
She leaves three children--Henry Miller, Chillicothe; Lethitia (Letitia) Leeper, Pottsboro Texas, and Alice Martine, Seattle Washington.

Funeral services from the late home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. McVoy, of the Elm Street M. E. church.

Have a great day!

My Grandfather--and How He is Related to All Three of my Other Grandparents: PHIPPEN, JORDAN REYNOLDS

After a while, people researching their ancestors might run across some interesting connections within their family tree, perhaps finding one or two common ancestors that link a maternal line with a paternal line.

Then there's my grandfather RANDOLPH BENJAMIN "ROLLA" MARTINE (1888-1976).  I recently discovered that--surprise!-- he is actually related to all three of my other grandparents.

My grandfather had, in his paternal lineage, colonial immigrant ancestors in New England (MA & CT), and New York, including New Amsterdam Dutch immigrants.

In his maternal lineage, virtually all of his ancestors were immigrants to colonial Virginia.

Here's what I discovered. By the way, most of these shared ancestors are back ten generations or more.

1) ROLLA was related to his wife RUBY BOLTON BROWN (1892-1967).  The surnames they share are: HOYT, STOWERS, SCOTT, WHATLOCK, BUSWELL, KENNEY (variantly spelled KINNEY/KEENEY/KINNE)  & possibly DUDLEY.  I say possibly because it appears that no one has ever proved the ancestry of  colonial Massachusetts governor THOMAS DUDLEY, who was an ancestor of RUBY BOLTON BROWN. All of these were New England surnames from the 1600s that originated in England.

2) ROLLA was related to my grandmother MINTTIE MAE BRUTON (1878-1960). This was quite a shock initially, but considering they both had roots in Virginia, maybe not such a shock after all.  The surnames they share are: PHIPPEN/FITZPEN, JORDAN, BURTE and COKER. Most of the ancestors they share lived in England 1500s-1600s and never set foot on American shores--though their children & grandchildren did. I have not been able to prove another  possible JORDAN connection in Virginia (same exact family as the JORDAN family in England) in MINTTIE MAE's pedigree.  She actually may be doubly related to these lines.

3) ROLLA was related to my grandfather ALONZO COX HUBER (1871-1851). This was even more of a shock than finding the connection to my grandmother. ALONZO's family were mostly German/Swiss immigrants who settled in PA, and English, Irish & Scottish Quakers who settled in Pennsylvania & North Carolina-- although he does have a branch of New Amsterdam Dutch, like ROLLA. The surnames they share are: VAN NESS, VANDERBURCHGRAEFF, REYNOLDS, HUNTINGTON and HALL.  Some were immigrant ancestors to PA, NY or VA, but some of these shared ancestors lived in England 1500s-1600s and never set foot on American shores.

Then I discovered that ROLLA's parents, CHARLES ALBERT MARTINE (1854-1926) and ALICE MILLER (1856-1921) were also related to each other,  sharing the same English PHIPPEN/FITZPEN, JORDAN, BURTE & COKER ancestors with each other as well as with grandmother MINTTIE MAE BRUTON.

The REYNOLDS connection is of great interest to me.  I have at least three lines of descent from CHRISTOPHER REYNOLDS (1530-1578) Dorset, England and his wife CHARISSA HUNTINGTON. Two lines of descent involve his granddaughter CECILY REYNOLDS (b abt 1600) who emigrated as a young girl to the Virginia Colonies and married THOMAS BAILEY, SAMUEL SILAS JORDAN (one of CECILY's cousins from the JORDAN family back in England) and WILLIAM FARRAR--and possible others, according to some sources, but these three have been historically documented.

My third line of descent involves RICHARD REYNOLDS (abt 1573 Kent, England; died Sussex Co England), son of CHRISTOPHER REYNOLDS & CHARISSA HUNTINGTON, who married ANN HARRISON.

Their son WILLIAM REYNOLDS (b abt 1606 Kent, England)  married MARGARET EXTON. They became Quakers, settled in Pennsylvania, and were likely some of the original purchasers of "Nottingham Lots" which William Penn established.  However, WILLIAM REYNOLDS died while on a business trip in Chichester, Sussex. England on Feb 19, 1667. His father apparently owned a large shipping company. (NOTE: Since writing this blogpost, I have seen conflicting accounts of WILLIAM REYNOLDS & MARGARET EXTON.    Some sources indicate that they went to Pennsylvania; others indicate that they stayed in England.  And they were likely not Quakers.  Comments appreciated!)

Recently I connected with a new DNA cousin from 23andMe and our shared ancestors are CHRISTOPHER REYNOLDS & CHARISSA HUNTINGTON.  She is a direct descendant of the REYNOLDS family, through yet another line: CHRISTOPHER REYNOLDS' son GEORGE REYNOLDS b 1555 England who married THOMASYN CHURCH, and grandson CHRISTOPHER REYNOLDS (b 1611 Gravesend, England)  who settled in Isle of Wight Co VA, married ELIZABETH RIVERS and died there in 1654.

As always, your comments appreciated. If you have further info on these families, or if you see an error, please let me know.

Have a great day!

A Friend of Friends Friday: African American Slaves Named in Deeds Spartanburg SC 1785-1827 Book P-Q-R

Note: "A Friend of Friends" was a password used on the Underground Railway

A few months ago I purchased a resource book of deed abstracts from Spartanburg, South Carolina circa 1785-1827 by Albert Bruce Pruitt.  I obtained the book in order to research my colonial BRUTON/BREWTON and WOFFORD families,  who lived in that area.

As I searched through the book, I discovered that it contained much more than land deeds, although they are the majority.  Also included were deeds for estates and their dispersal, for the sale of horses & other livestock, for the dispersal of all household goods & furniture, such as when individuals were leaving for another area (usually Georgia) and some deeds  pertaining to the sale of slaves.

Here are  deed abstracts that I found in books P-Q-R that name African American slaves:

MRS CHARLES W RHODES
Victoria lost one of her most public-spirited citizens yesterday with the death of Mrs. CHARLES W. RHODES of 1024 Terrace Avenue, noted for many years as a keen worker in the interests of Jubilee Hospital. Mrs. Rhodes passed away suddenly early yesterday morning as the result of a heart seizure on Tuesday evening, which was of such obviously serious nature that she was removed at once to the hospital. Her daughter, Miss ETHEL RHODES, RN, who was summoned from Seattle, arrived just too late to be with her at the end.

The remains will repose on Saturday at the residence on Terrace Avenus until 2:15 p.m. when the funeral cortege will proceed to Christ Church Cathedral, where services will be held at 2:30 o'clock. The remains will be forwarded to Vancouver for cremation. Interrment will later be made at Ross Bay Cemetary here. haywards BC Funeral Company is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mrs. RHODES was born on April 18, 1868 in Folsom, CA, being the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. H.N.H. BROWN. She first came to Victoria in 1896 as a bride, her husband the late CHARLES W. RHODES, who died about twenty years ago, being the manager for many years at the Brackman-Ker Milling Company. They took up their residence on Terrace Avenue immediately on arrival here, and Mrs. Rhodes continued to make her home there until the last.

INTEREST IN HOSPITAL
Keenly interested in hospital welfare, Mrs. Rhodes became identified with the Jubilee Hospital very soon after her arrival here, and for nearly thirty years had been one of its most enthusiastic champions. Recognition of this was given practical expression when she was elected a member of the board of directors as a representative of subscribers in 1907, 26 years ago, holding office continuously ever since. Still earlier she was elected president of the Women's Auxiliary, which under her unflagging leadership became one of the most important sources of practical assistance to the hospital.

It was under her regime that the auxilairy projected its remarkable campaign to raise funds for the building of a new wing, a work temporarily frustrated by the intervention of the Great War. When the project was finally comsumated, Mrs. Rhodes and the auxiliary again threw their whole-hearted support into the undertaking, and gave the board invaluable assistance with the furnishing and other matters.

CONTINUES WORK
Even after she resigned her office in the Women's Auxiliary four years ago, Mrs. Rhodes continued to give assistance with advice. One of her outstanding undertakings in the hospital's behalf in recent years was the organization of the big tombola, for which she herself secured most of the prizes.

To all of her hospital colleaguesand associates, as well as her very large circle of personal friends, the news of her death has carried a sense of personal loss. In addition to her hospital activities, she was for many years an active member of Gonzales Chapter I.O.D.E.

In addition to her daughter, Miss ETHEL RHODES, there survive two grandchildren in England, and a brother FRANK R. BROWN, living in Alaska. A second daughter Mrs. Sturrock (should read Sterry), MABEL, died just two years ago.

TRIBUTES PAID
Warm tribute to the wonderful work accomplished by Mrs. Rhodes was paid by H.H. Shandley, president of the Jubilee board of directors: "In the deeply-regretted death of Mrs. Rhodes, the Jubille Hospital has suffered an irreparable loss. Year in and out she worked indefatigablyfor the hospital, whose cause she had so dearly at heart. Never shall we be able to find anyone who will give so generously and lavishly of their time and energy in the interests of the hospital as Mrs. Rhodes has for the last quarter of a century."

In expressing the feelings of the Women's Auxiliary of the Jubilee Hospital in the passing of Mrs. C.W. Rhodes, Mrs. W.A. Chambers president said," The name of Mrs. Rhodes has been associated with the Auxiliary for so many years that it will be a long time before we fully realize that she has left us to carry of the work that she did for a quarter of a century. her interest and enthusiasm in all hospital affairs were always an inspiration to us, and every member feels too deeply for words the loss of one who was always ready to do all that was possible for hospital welfare. Her sudden passing leaves us with a real sense of bereavement."

Have a great day!

Betty
