Surname Saturday: Luckhart, Lukehart, Lookhart, Lueckhardt

The German & Swiss surnames in my family tree have been the most difficult to research in that there appears to have been  no consistent spelling of the surnames once the families reached the American colonies in the 1700s.  For example, HUBER can also be found in records as Hoover, Hover, and Hoober;  SCHREIBER can also be found in records as Shriver, Schriever, Schrivenor, Schriver and more. KEFFER can also be found as Keefer, Keifer, Kiefer, etc etc.

The most difficult name in this genre that I've had to trace is LUECKHARDT, which in US records can be found as Luckhart, Lukehart, Lookhart and even Luckett or  Lockhart.

Here is my branch of the Luckhart family (I'll use this spelling). This information is from wills, census and church records, and is what I have found so far, with my ancestors highlighted in Red:

Hi Betty, I came across a message board post of yours at ancestry and left a comment... here's what I said...

No idea if you're still out there or looking... but I've been searching the other direction for the parents of James Melford Johnson. I found his mother to be Sarah Shriver... she is not listed as one of the kids of Susannah and Lewis, but everything else matches (except my susannah was born in 1786). In 1850 there is a widowed Susan Shriver living in Whetstone, Crawford, Ohio. She is living with three possible children/grandchildren...

In the 1860 census I looked and looked and looked and found another Susannah "Shives" which I figured out is actually "Shriver." She is listed living with two other people... a Mary Shriver and my James M. Johnson.

The Susannah I'm looking for fits everything about Susannah Luckhart... it must be the same woman, but it's always hard to make that final decision that it's her without concrete proof.

I know for a fact (from a death certificate) that my James M. Johnson's mom is Sarah Shriver (born in Ohio) but I know nothing more of her. It's possible that she is a daughter of one of Susannah's older sons.

I hope you're still out there and this info helps!

Thanks very much, Rachel, but the "Susannah Shriver" in the census you posted is not the same person as my ggg grandmother Susannah Luckhart who married Lewis Shriver and ended up in Ross Co OHio.

Since I posted my query, I have located an original copy of the 1830 will of Susannah's husband Lewis Shriver. He lists all their children by name, and they did not have a daughter named Sarah.

Lewis Shriver left his wife the mill that he owned in Ross Co OH. She is present in the 1840 Ross Co OH census, living near her son Frederick William Shriver.

Yours, Betty T

I believe Hannah was born sometime after 1784 and 1790 since the 1850 gives her age as
60 years and the 1860 census gives her age as 71 years.

There is a baptismal record for Vallendin, son of Conrad and Anna Maria Luckart, b. 20 July 1788, bp. 28 Sept. [1788]. Sponsors: Vallendin and Anna Maria Muller at the St. Paul's Union Church. Lutheran and Reformed Congregations, near Clearspring, Washington County, Maryland, 1788-1853.

There is a probate case (4286)file for Valentine Luckhart dated 1825 in Ross County, Ohio where he died intestate with various papers pertaining to the settlement of his estate. One of them is signed by Margaret Luckart dated 29 December 1824 stating that her son, Valentine Luckart, wanted his father to receive what remained after his debts were settled. This is available on Family Search.

This proves that Conrad Luckhart was married to a Margaret sometime after 1788.

I am descended from Conrad Luckhart through his son Conrad.
