A Friend of Friends Friday: African American Slaves Named in Deeds Spartanburg SC 1785-1827 Book D-E-F

Note: "A Friend of Friends" was a password used on the Underground Railway

A few months ago I purchased a resource book of deed abstracts from Spartanburg, South Carolina circa 1785-1827 by Albert Bruce Pruitt.  I obtained the book in order to research my colonial BRUTON/BREWTON and WOFFORD families,  who lived in that area.

As I searched through the book, I discovered that it contained much more than land deeds, although they are the majority.  Also included were deeds for estates and their dispersal, for the sale of horses & other livestock, for the dispersal of all household goods & furniture, such as when individuals were leaving for another area (usually Georgia) and some deeds  pertaining to the sale of slaves.

Book D  1794-1797

p 13-15 April 24 1794 ENOCH FLOID {FLOYD} (Spartanburg) to THOMAS PRICE (SC) for 75 pounds sterling sold two Negroes: PHILLIS about 47 years old and her son HARRY about 9 years old; PHILLIS is African and has her country marks; HARRY is South Carolina born. Witness Wm Easley and Andrew Thomson; Signed ENOCH FLOID. Witness Oath Sept 3, 1794 Andrew Thomson to Thomas Moore. Received Sept 8, 1794.

p 48-50 Feb 4, 1795 ISHAM BOBBITT (Spartanburg) to JESSE CONNELL ( same); for 46 pounds, 13 shillings, 4 pence sold a Negro boy JAMES. Witness I. HARRISON, JP. Signed ISHAM BOBBITT. Certified Feb 4, 1795 by I.  HARRISON, JP. Received April 21, 1796.

p 183 Jan 10, 1795 PRISCILLA UNDERWOOD (Spartanburg) to son WILLIS UNDERWOOD for love and affection give Negro girl SARAH, 2 cows, and a "mare colt"; Note: Jan 10, 1795 THOMAS UNDERWOOD now has the 2 cows and mare colt valued at 6 pounds 6 shillings which he is obliged to pay WILLIS when WILLIS becomes 21. Witness John Underwood and Enoch Jones Underwood. Signed PRISCILLA UNDERWOOD's mark. Witness Oath Jan 13, 1795 John Underwood to I. Harrison. Received April 26, 1796.

p 388-389 Dec 17, 1795 BAYLIS EARLE to RICHARD BARRY; for $60 sold a Negro girl 14 years old called NUTTY; Note: said girl free of any disorders and impediments as far as BAYLIS knows, except loss of sight in one eye. p 395-396 April 13, 1796 THOMAS WRIGHT (Spartanburg) to THOMAS PRICE (same); for 140 pounds sterling sold a Negro woman MARY 30 years old and her three children: ROSE 6 years old; EASTHER 4 years old, and ARCH about 2 years old, "all country born". Witness John Wright and Andrew Thomson; Signed THOMAS WRIGHT. Received Sept 21, 1796.

p 397-398 Aug 22, 1796 JOHN TIMMONS (Spartanburg) to grandson JAMES LAMIEL TIMMONS (same) for love and affection give a Negro boy named BEN, son of CATE. Witness John Bowne and John Tap; Witness Oath Sept 12, 1796 John Tap to Ism Foster. Received Sept 22, 1796.

p 400-401 Feb 12, 1796 THOMAS WMSON {WILLIAMSON} (Spartanburg) to HENRY O'NAIL; for 60 pounds sold a Negro girl SALL age 17. Witness William Patton. Signed THOMAS WILLIAMSON.  Received Sept 24, 1796.

p 431 Dec 30, 1797 JOHN SLOAN to ADAM SLOAN; for $250 sold a Negro ISAAC. Witness Richard Barry; Signed JOHN SLOAN; Witness Oath Jan 3, 1798 Richard Barry to Thomas Moore.

p 92-94 March 10, 1797 ALEXANDER McMEKIN (Loudoun Co VA) to son BENJAMIN PERRINE McMEKIN; for love and affection and 5 shillings sterling sold a Negro woman LINN and her child JACK. Witness Gust Eggin, Thomas Janney, Jno Mathias. Signed A. McMAKIN. Witness Oath (Loudoun Co VA) March f11, 1797 Thos Janney and Jno Mattias to Joseph Smith. March 11, 1797 Certified that Joseph Smith is a justice of peace by Chas Binns, clerk Loudoun Co VA.

p 149-150 May 21, 1797 BURGESS WEST (Union Co SC) to ALEXANDER ELDER (Spartanburg) for 75 pounds sterling sold a Negro woman DINAH about 20 years old, born in Maryland. p 35 Jan 13, 1798 MOSES TIMMONS (Spartanburg) to JOHN CRAWFORD (same) for $400 sold a Negro man WIL. Witness B D Shumate, JP; Signed MOSES TIMMONS. Received Jan 17, 1798.

p 77-78 Oct 3, 1797 REBECKAH ARINDELL (Spartanburg) to son REDICK ARINDELL (same) for love and affection give a Negro boy BARTLEY about 11 years old. Witness John Turner and William Morgan; signed REBECKAH ARINDELL's mark.  Witness Oath Jan 13, 1798 John Turner to H. McCray. Received Jan 29, 1798.

p 210-211 July 14, 1798 JOHN WRIGHT (Spartanburg) to HENRY O'NAIL (same) for $240 sold a Negro girl COMFORT about 9 years old. Witness Thomas Moore JP and John O'Neill. Signed JOHN WRIGHT. Received Nov 2, 1798.

p 261-262 Nov 13, 1798 WILLIAM BAGHTON (Spartanburg) to WILLIAM DUNCAN (same) for love and affection give (until Dec 5, 1799) all his Negroes: RACHAL, ISHAM, NED, HARREY, LEWIS and ISHAM (sic); where ever they may be found.  Witness Thornton McDaniel, Drury McDaniel and John Cooper. p 284 March 15, 1798 DAVID WELLS (Spartanburg) to HENRY WELLS (same) for (blank) "hundred sixty" dollars sold a gray horse, a black horse and a Negro man named JACK. Witness Wm Wells. Signed DAVID WELLS. Certified Dec 1, 1798 I. Harrison. Received Dec 28, 1798.

p 291-291 July 20, 1798 JOHN WRIGHT (Spartanburg) to CHARLES MOORE Jr (same) for $350 sold a Negro man named CESAR under 20 years old.  Witness Richard Barry and Thomas Wright. Signed JOHN WRIGHT. Witness Oath Aug 25, 1798 Richard Barry to Thomas Moore. Received Jan 21, 1799.

p 295 Nov 18, 1798 WILLIAM PARKER to GEOR BREWTON JP (Spartanburgh) William Denys (denies?)  he gave a report that JAMES SOUTHERLIN was "conserned" with JAMES SOUTHERLIN's Negro woman (not named) in a carnal way, and WILLIAM never saw JAMES SOUTHERLIN in such an act or had grounds to think JAMES SOUTHERLIN guilty. p 328 Sept 8, 1799 JOHN SLOAN (Spartanburg) to ADAM SLOAN (same) for $200 sold a Negro girl SARAH about 10 years old.  Witness Thomas Moore JP. Signed JOHN SLOAN Received Aug 8, 1799.

p 346-347 April 20 1799 THOMAS WRIGHT (Spartanburg) to ANDREW THOMSON (same) for 800 Spanish milled dollars sold two Negroes: a man MOSES about 17 years old and another named BILLEY not described; both born in Virginia. Witness Thos Wright and Michael Barnett. Signed THOMAS WRIGHT.  Witness Oath May 21, 1799 Michael Barnett to Drury McDaniel. Received Aug 8, 1799.

p 347 Jan 9, 1799 MARGARET McCARTER (Spartanburg) to ALEXANDER McCARTER for 30 pound SC money sold two Negro boys GEORGE and WILLIS, but MARGARET reserves the right to use the Negroes during her lifetime. Witness James Jordan. Signed MARGARET McCARTER's mark. Receive Aug 8, 1799.

p 347-348 Jan 9, 1799 MARGARET McCARTER (Spartanburg) to MARY McCARTER and her daughter MATELDY, in joint contract; for 5 pounds sold a Negro girl DOLLIE to be MARYU'S during her lifetime and MATELDY's when MARY dies. Witness James Jordan. Signed MARGARET McCARTER's mark. Receive Aug 8, 1799.

p 371 March 6, 1799 GEORGE NEWMAN (Spartanburg) to MARTIN NEWMAN for 40 pounds sold a Negro winch {wench} JUDE about 22 years old; sale to occur when GEORGE and his wife die.
