A Friend of Friends Friday: African American Slaves Named in Deeds Spartanburg SC 1785-1827 Book M-N-O

Note: "A Friend of Friends" was a password used on the Underground Railway

A few months ago I purchased a resource book of deed abstracts from Spartanburg, South Carolina circa 1785-1827 by Albert Bruce Pruitt.  I obtained the book in order to research my colonial BRUTON/BREWTON and WOFFORD families,  who lived in that area.

As I searched through the book, I discovered that it contained much more than land deeds, although they are the majority.  Also included were deeds for estates and their dispersal, for the sale of horses & other livestock, for the dispersal of all household goods & furniture, such as when individuals were leaving for another area (usually Georgia) and some deeds  pertaining to the sale of slaves.

Book M 1809-1811

p 26-28 Feb 25, 1809 THOMAS WOODRUFF III (SC) to JOSEPH WOODRUFF (Spartanburg) a bond dated Feb 1, 1809 for $3000 to pay $1500 with interest; to secure payment of the bond, Thomas sells to Joseph Negro slaves : a woman WINNY and her future increase, her boy YORK, etc etc; Witness Archibald McCravy and Thomas Farrow. Signed THOMAS WOODRUFF III. Witness oath April 7, 1809 Archibald McCravy to John Brewton. Received April 7, 1809.

p 29 March 11, 1809 SARAH FOSTER (Spartanburg) to THOMAS TINSLEY (same) for $500 sold a Negro woman SARAH and a Negro boy EDOM, 3 years old, and a Negro girl JUD, 2 or 3 months old, both children of SARAH, and a feather bed and furniture. Witness Richard Daniel and Thomas James. Signed SARAH FOSTER's mark. Witness oath April 8, 1809 Richard Daniel to Danl White. Received April 7, 1809.

p 40 Jan 25, 1809 WILLIAM WEBB to JAMES VERNON; for $420 sold a Negro slave SAM about 23 years old. Witness John Wood. Signed WILLIAM WEBB. Witness oath April 11, 1809 John Wood to John Collins. Received April 11, 1809.

p 97-98  Jan 23, 1809 JOHN PENINGTON (Spartanburg) to JOHN WOOD (same) to secure loan of $200 John Pennington gives John Wood a Negro boy JAMES about 9 years old until Dec 25, 1810; Condition: sale void if Penington pays debt. Witness Benjamin Wood and William Wilson. Signed JOHN PENINGTON. Witness oath April 28, 1809 William Wilson to Tryu/Tyrce Glenn. Received July 21, 1809.

p 116-117 July 17, 1809 RICHARD KERBY (Spartanburg) to "brothers-in-law" BERDSONG (BIRDSONG) TOLLESON and JOSEPH BERRYMAN TOLLESON, youngest sons of MAJ JOHN TOLLESON; for love and affection give to Berdsong a Negro woman ALIC and her child GILBERD and her future increase, and to Joseph a Negro woman RACHAL and her future increase; if Berdsong or Joseph die without heirs, slaves go to their two brothers living; James Tolleson and Bersong or Joseph and otherwise slaves to to sole surviving brother; slaves bought in Virginia from MR. p 117-118 July 17, 1809 JOHN TOLLESON, late merchant (Spartanburg) to JAMES TOLLESON for love and affection give a "yeallow" Negro wench BET and her child MALINDA and her future increase; if James dies without an heir, then slave goes to his brothers BIRDSONG and JOSEPH TOLLESON, equally divided. p 133-134 Sept 10, 1805  ADAM SLOAN (Pendleton District SC) to RICHARD BERRY (Spartanburg) for $300 sold a Negro woman AMY about 24 years old. Witness Aaron Hill and William Castury. Signed ADAM SLOAN. Witness oath Aaron Hill to John McMillan on Sept 21, 1805, and to Drury McDaniel (not dated). Received Nov 2, 1809.

p 182-184 March 8, 1809 PLEASANT BRANHAM (Spartanburg) to ROBERT MILLICAN (same) to secure oa not of $255.04, Pleasant sells Robert a Negro man PETER, etc etc, Condition: Sale void if Pleasant pays Robert the debt. p 310-312 July 20, 1810 JAMES TEMPLETON (Spartanburg)to JAMES VERNON (same), for $500 by bond July 20, 1810 and to secure the bond sold "where he lives" including his house and improvements and all crop now in the ground, and "small" grain now cut and stacked, a Negro man POMPY, etc etc. Condition sale void if James Templeton pays debt in two years. p 314 Oct 28, 1809 MICHAEL WOOD (Spartanburg) to THOMAS WOOD (same) for $220 sold a Negro boy MOSES 5 years old. Witness Theophelus Cannon and Tyrce Glenn. Signed MICHAEL WOOD's mark. Witness oat Oct 9, 1810 Tyrce Glenn to Drury McDaniels. Received Oct 10, 1810.

p 222 Oct 27, 1810 EDWARD McDANIEL to DRURY McDANIEL JQ; Edward swears that JEREMIAH HARRIS, commonly called JERRY is a free born Negro who was bound to him by court of Macklenburg Co VA, and has served his time to age 21 and is now free. p 44-45 April 16, 1813 CATHERINE TRAYLOR (Spartanburg) to daughter MARY TRAYLOR (same) for love and affection give a Negro girl FEMPEY about 18 months old. Witness Thomas Bomar and Elisha Bomar. p 56-57 Dec 29, 1813 REBECKA ARENDALE (Spartanburg) to son RICHARD ARENDALE (same) and to son BRIDGES ARENDALE (Franklin Co Tenn) for love and afffection give equally divided (at her death) all goods and chattels in her dwelling house, all stock and three Negroes WILL, MORRIS and LUKE.  Witness Ellist Hickman and John Arendale. p 186-187 Oct 7, 1814 JOHN FARROW to JOHN MORSO and wife JINNEY; "since their marriage" give a Negro girl (unamed), etc etc, and other articles JOHN has let them jhave since their marriage. p 239-240 April 14, 1815 EDWARD SMITH (Spartanburg) to sons CHARLES and HOLMAN SMITH (same) for love and affection give two Negro boys--BURRELL and RANDOL; they get the Negroes at death of Edward and his wife.  Witness William Smith and Moses Waters. Signed EDWD SMITH Witness oath April 17, 1815 William Smith to Thomas Poole. Received April 17,, 1815.

p 256-257 March 13, 1815 HENRY HINES (Spartanburg) to EDITH RAY; quit claim to Negro girl MARY and at Edith's death  to her children (that she has or may have) by Andrew Ray; If Edith has no children, MARY and her increas go "with said mother to said Berry children above mentioned to return to said heirs" Witness None. Signed HENRY HINES. Edith Ray receives property and complys with agreement (not dated). Witness Henry Turner. Signed EDITH RAY's mark. Witness oath not dated. Henry Turner to Leonard Adcock. p 275 April 6, 1814 JAMES WOFFORD to daughter DIDAMEA JOHNSON for good causes gives a Negro girl VENUS and her increase.  Witness Isaac Wofford and Jacob Driver. Signed JAMES WOFFORD. Witness oath July 24, 1814 Isaac Wofford to Drury McDaniel. Received Aug 7, 1815.
