The top portion of this page is the marriage record of my great grandparents, FRANK RICARD BROWN and MARY ETTA KENNEDY. They were married on July 2, 1878 in Aurora, Esmerelda Co Nevada. The town of Aurora was about fifteen miles northeast of the town of Bodie, California, where they were living at the time of their marriage. It's likely there wasn't a justice of the peace available in Bodie at that time.
MARY ETTA's father, THOMAS KENNEDY step mother ELIZABETH and sister SARAH ADELINE KENNEDY all lived in Bodie in 1878.
These days, both Bodie CA and Aurora NV are ghost towns. Bodie is a California State Historical park, and well worth the visit if you are in the area. My 80 year old mother and I went there in 2001, and it was quite an adventure! It's hard to believe that anyone could survive is such a brutal climate!

Have a great day!

I have an ancestor named Mary Etta, married about the same time as your Mary Etta. It must have been a popular name for its time. I haven't seen it used before or since. In some censuses her name was spelled "Marietta", just to confuse me!
