A few months ago I purchased a resource book of deed abstracts from Spartanburg, South Carolina circa 1785-1827 by Albert Bruce Pruitt. I obtained the book in order to research my colonial BRUTON/BREWTON and WOFFORD families, who lived in that area.
As I searched through the book, I discovered that it contained much more than land deeds, although they are the majority. Also included were deeds for estates and their dispersal, for the sale of horses & other livestock, for the dispersal of all household goods & furniture, such as when individuals were leaving for another area (usually Georgia) and some deeds pertaining to the sale of slaves.

p 98-99 April 2, 1804 JOHN WALKER (Spartanburg) to THOMAS BURTON (same); John is to deliver to Thomas a Negro boy PHIL on Dec 25, 1804 for Thomas to sell for $100 "lent" money to John in case John doesn't pay $100 by then; Note: balance of sale money is to be delivered by John Walker. p 118-119 June 6, 1805 JOHN SLOAN and "RHODA JOHN SLOAN" (or JOHNSON), give a Negro RACHEL; John Sloan got Negro my marriage contract; RACHEL to remain property of John Sloan's wife during her lifetime, then Negro goes to RHODA SLOAN at death of Mrs. John Sloan. p 280-281 March 19, 1806 LAURENCE RAMBO (Granby Dist SC) to MERIMAN BURNS (Spartanburg); gives power of attorney to secure a Negro; Laurence owns a Negro ELICK and hired him to George Culberson for a year which is over April 2, 1806; Laurence thinks George Culberson sold ELICK and "is carried towards the western country"; Meriman is to search for ELICK and return him to Laurence.
