A Friend of Friends Friday: African American Slaves Named in Deeds Spartanburg SC 1785-1827 Book K-L

Note: "A Friend of Friends" was a password used on the Underground Railway

A few months ago I purchased a resource book of deed abstracts from Spartanburg, South Carolina circa 1785-1827 by Albert Bruce Pruitt.  I obtained the book in order to research my colonial BRUTON/BREWTON and WOFFORD families,  who lived in that area.

As I searched through the book, I discovered that it contained much more than land deeds, although they are the majority.  Also included were deeds for estates and their dispersal, for the sale of horses & other livestock, for the dispersal of all household goods & furniture, such as when individuals were leaving for another area (usually Georgia) and some deeds  pertaining to the sale of slaves.

p 4 Jan 17, 1804 THOMAS BENNETT (Spartanburg) to son VINCENT BENNETT (same) for love and affection give a Negro man RICHARD about 23 years old now in Thomas' possession. Witness Andrew B Moore. Signed THOMAS BENNETT. Witness oath March 4, 1805 Andrew B Moore to Jacob Utley. Received March 8, 1805

p 92 Feb 20, 1804 MOSES TIMMONS (Spartanburg) to EATON WALKER for $330 sold a Negro wench JANE. Witness John Walker. Signed MOSES TIMMONS. Witness oat May 6, 1804 John Walker. Received May 6, 1805

p 98-99 April 2, 1804 JOHN WALKER (Spartanburg) to THOMAS BURTON (same); John is to deliver to Thomas a Negro boy PHIL on Dec 25, 1804 for Thomas to sell for $100 "lent" money to John in case John doesn't pay $100 by then; Note: balance of sale money is to be delivered by John Walker. Witness Isham Foster. Signed JOHN WALKER. Witness oath May 6, 1805 Isham Foster to Abner Benson. Received May 8, 1805.

p 118-119 June 6, 1805 JOHN SLOAN and "RHODA JOHN SLOAN" (or JOHNSON), give a Negro RACHEL; John Sloan got Negro my marriage contract; RACHEL to remain property of John Sloan's wife during her lifetime, then Negro goes to RHODA SLOAN at death of Mrs. John Sloan. Rhoda pays "one of her value and her increase" if any to Betsy Davis, 1/3 to Sally Davis in 12 months, "after division of their mother". Witness Samuel Evans. Signed JOHN SLOAN. p157-158 Sept 17, 1805 JAMES SHARPE (Rutherford Co NC) to GOWEN HARRIS (Spartanburg) for $50 sold a negro woman JENNY. Witness William Harris Jr and William Harris Sr. Signed JAMES SHARP. Witness oath Oct 2, 1805 William Harris Jr to Drury McDaniel. Received Oct 7, 1805.

p206-207 Aug 8, 1803 ELIZABETH TATE (Spartanburg) to son-in-law ABNER McAFEE (Lincoln Co NC) for love and give "all goods and chattels"; HUGH, EUDY, BET, WILLIS and theri increase. p 260-261 Feb 3, 1806 WILLIAM and ELIZABETH BITER {or BETER} (Spartanburg)  to MOSES BITER {or BETER} for love and affection give "all our Negroes" RACHEL, NED, LEWIS, TIM or ALECK, GOB and JOHN. p 280-281 March 19, 1806 LAURENCE RAMBO (Granby Dist SC) to MERIMAN BURNS (Spartanburg); gives power of attorney to secure a Negro; Laurence owns a Negro ELICK and hired him to George Culberson for a year which is over April 2, 1806; Laurence thinks George Culberson sold ELICK and "is carried towards the western country"; Meriman is to search for ELICK and return him to Laurence. p316-317 April 19, 1800 JOHN SLOAN and wife MARY (Spartanburg) to SARAH DAVIS; for love and affection give a Negro girl CHARLOT with half of issue in our lifetime to Sarah, and half to Alexander Sloan; Condition: CHARLOT remains with JOHN and MARY SLOAN during their lifetime and sale is void if MARY SLOAN has issue.  Witness Wm Dannelly and Anna Dannelly. p 344 Jun 26, 1806 MARGARET McCARTER (Spartanburg) to son-in-law JOHN HURT (same) for love and affection give a Negro girl NUTTY {or MUTTY}. Witness ALEXANDER  McARTER, MARY McCARTER, and JAMES VERNON. Signed MARGARET McCARTER's mark. Witness oath June 27, 1806 James Vernon to Ism Foster. Received July 7, 1806.

p 353, 2nd 353 July 11, 1806 JOHN MURRELL  (Spartanburg) to his two children JOHN {MURRELL?} and ELIZABETH DABNEY;, who now lives with my father-in-law CHRISTOPHER JOHNSON (same) for love and affection give a Negro woman SUKEY, a Negro girl VINE and all further increase equally divided between them when they come of age or marry; if either dies before coming of age or marrying, that part is to be divided equally by his other three sons, DAVID, WILLIAM and JAMES; also he gives ELIZABETH a Negro girl AMY, SUKEY's child; all are given to father-in-law for support of JOHN and ELIZABETH, and father-in-law is to rear the children at his discrssion (discretion?). p 31-32 Sept 30, 1804 MARY WALKER (Rutherford Co NC) to GEORGE WALKER (Spartanburg) for $3000 sold the following Negroes: wench FANN; four girls MARY, RACHEL, SARAH, and CASEY; a boy MATTHEW, and a young child. Witness William Walker. Signed MARY WALKER. Witness oath July 16, 1807 William Walker to Abner Benson. Received July 16, 1807.

p 73-74 April 26, 1807 OBADIAH WINGO (Spartanburg) to WILLIS WINGO (same) for $200 sold a Negro boy ENOCH about 6 or 7 years old. Witness Hamilton Wilson and Thomas Wingo. Signed OBADIAH WINGO. Witness oath Sept 16, 1807 Hamilton Wilson to William Lancaster. Received Sept 15,  1807.

p 90-91 June 3, 1807 CHRISTOPHER JOHNSON (Spartanburg) to LAWSON THOMSON (same) " by note of hand" a bond of $1100 to secure the bond, Christopher sells a Negro man BOB, a Negro wench DOLL, a Negro girl WATSEY, boy WILL and boy OBEY. Condition: sale void if Christopher pays debt.  Witness Lewis Shelton and Sarah Thomson. Signed CHRISTOPHER JOHNSON. Witness oath Aug 31, 1807 Lewis Shelton to Drury McDaniel. Received Oct 5, 1807.

p 187 Dec 8, 1807 JAMES and JOSEPH BLACK (Albermace Co VA) to JAMES VERNON (Spartanburg) for $300 sold a Negro boy BEN. Witness Samuel Crowder. Signed JAMES and JOSEPH BLACK. Witness oath March 7, 1806. Samuel Crowder to Ism Foster. Received march 7, 1808.

p 305-306 April 1, 1807 JONATHAN CUD Sr (Spartanburg) to Negro woman ABBY {or ABBY CUD}, for "good causes  and valuable considerations" give her her freedom and bequeath ABBY 15 acres in Rutherford Co NC, including his dwelling house and other out houses, and give ABBY five cattle, a pewter dish, 3 plates, 3 basons,k a walnut bedstead and furniture, an iron (blank), an oven, "all my corn and weat now ready" and the rent of above land, a loom and tacklery, 5 chairs, a churn, 2 pails, a barrow, a sow and pigs, 9 pewter spoons, two punch boles, a mug, a black jack (or jark), a flat iron, all cotton, one bee gum, a basket, etc; given during her lifetime.  Witness William Lewis, James Boyd, and Nathaniel Lewis.
